The program runs for four weeks with a minimum of 130 hours comprising of input, teaching practice and individual consultations. Expected attendance is 100%.
The course is extremely intensive and demanding. There is a lot of material to be covered and assimilated on the course. The regular observations by tutors and peers during teaching practice can cause considerable strain, particularly to those not used to being observed. Careful evaluation and reflection is required by participants of both themselves and their colleagues’ approach to teaching and is central to the course.
A normal day begins with input sessions from 8am, followed by a break for lunch and then teaching practice in the afternoon. The course runs from Monday to Friday, but participants will normally need to come into the centre on the first and second Saturdays to conduct an interview and teach a one-to-one lesson as part of the Learner Profile assignment. The final day of the course is a Saturday – the day of the external moderation.
Outside of course hours participants will be expected to:
- undertake pre-sessional reading
- prepare for lessons and write lesson plans
- liaise with peers to clarify and share ideas
- consult with tutors on tasks
- consult with tutors before and after teaching practice
- complete set tasks
- complete homework tasks
