Maureen Pollard first came to Indonesia in 1987 and although Indonesia was not her first choice, she soon fell in love with the country and the people. Jakarta was a huge city of 8 million people back in 1987 and even then Maureen says the traffic was bad. Maureen started teaching in 1987 in Jakarta and then moved to Yogyakarta in 1990. Soon afterwards she returned to Jakarta and began working with IALF teaching mainly General English but also English for Academic Purposes and TOEFL. Over the years Maureen has taught so many students at IALF and her favorites have always been the scholarship students who she says were always so dedicated and enthusiastic and smart. Maureen has a degree in Laboratory Technology and this meant that she was particularly happy when teaching students from the health sector in Indonesia who had been awarded scholarships. Earlier this year, after 28 years in Indonesia, it was time for Maureen to return to Canada to live and work . She is looking forward to the beautiful scenery and lifestyle in British Columbia, to be closer to her family and to continue with her teaching career.
