In 1991 Alex Gough decided to take a break from work in England. He traveled to Indonesia via Thailand and Malaysia. He started his Indonesian adventure in Bukittinggi and as Alex says, he fell in love with Indonesia. He travelled extensively throughout the country visiting places as far apart as Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Bali and Flores. While traveling thru Bali he was offered a teaching position in Japan. He was certainly interested in the idea of teaching English but decided to return to England first to learn how to teach English. He soon returned to Indonesia.

In 1997 IALF Bali decided to set up an IELTS Test Centre on the campus of UNAIR  Surabaya. IALF needed IELTS examiners for the centre. Alex applied and was successful and shortly afterwards he took up the position of Centre Manager and IELTS Test Administrator. After a few years at UNAIR the centre moved to Jl. Sumatra where they have remained for the past 15 years.  In July 2016 IALF Surabaya will move to new premises in Jl. Nagel, Surabaya.  These exciting new premises will have the latest language learning facilities including a large auditorium, a digital computer hub and a comprehensive Resource Centre.
