Kang Guru Indonesia began in 1989 at the request of the government of Indonesia, and funded by the Australian government. Based around its weekly English language radio program, KGI developed a range of high-quality teaching resources, media, and teacher training workshops to respond to the English language needs and interests of networks of teachers and learners in Indonesia. An integral objective was to contribute to better-informed perspectives about Australia, its culture, and its relationship with Indonesia. The KGI motto, ‘Good Neighbours Make Good Friends’ highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship in an accessible way. KGI ended in 2016.
