Each level (40 hours of tuition) follows a theme-based syllabus with tasks designed to encourage you to use your newly-acquired language in real life communication. Grammar and vocabulary are taught as a means of facilitating communication rather than ends in themselves. The maximum number of students in a group is 12.
Classes are usually conducted from Monday to Friday in the mornings, leaving the afternoons and weekends free for the cultural program and socializing with your host family.
In order to place you at the most appropriate level, you will need to take a short placement test, comprising a written test and a brief interview. A time can be arranged for you to take the written test online in advance, while the interview is conducted on the first day of the course.
Assessment is on a continual basis with grades being assigned for performance in language tasks, homework and class participation.
The cultural studies program comprises a series of lectures and workshops led by experts in the respective fields. Topics include: dance and music, cooking, batik making, etc. There is also a full day trip at the weekend.
If you are especially interested in Indonesian culture, engaging yourself in the everyday social life of the Indonesians within the heart of a host family is a memorable experience. The family provides accommodation, breakfast and evening meal, and transportation to and from IALF for the duration of your stay.
