Scholarship students debate topical issues

As part of their pre-departure training at IALF Jakarta, students on the Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) program participated in a series of debates on topics of domestic and international interest, including, Gambling should be legalized, Indonesia needs a good dictator, The Indonesian Institute for Public Administration should be closed down and Is George Bush good for the U.S.? The debate by ADS students on ‘Is George Bush good for the U.S.?

The three-member teams were awarded scores by two judges, also students, as well as given feedback by their teachers. The debates were videotaped, giving the speakers the opportunity to evaluate their presentation skills and improve their ability to present an argument in an academic context.

The ADS scheme is funded by the Australian government through AusAID. Together with the Australian Partnership Scheme (APS) approximately 600 postgraduate scholarships will be awarded to Indonesians in 2007. Both programs are managed by IDP Education through the Scholarship Office in Indonesia.
