World AIDS Day in Surabaya

IALF Surabaya students supported World AIDS Day with an awareness building competition held on 1 December 2007 at Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya. Stop Discriminating, Start Educating was the message of the competition and participants received a special edition C-59 white t-shirt emblazoned with World AIDS Day slogans, and a red ribbon – the international symbol for HIV/AIDS awareness. They took part in ‘The Amazing Race for World Aids Day’ – a treasure hunt, with clues and answers related to HIV/AIDS, which led them to participating stores in Tunjungan Plaza.

The event was organized by students from Study Prep 7 as part of a class project. It was open to non-IALF students as well; spots for 12 teams were quickly filled, a waiting list soon grew and students from other classes volunteered in record numbers.

The aim of the activity was to draw attention to issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and to challenge some attitudes and beliefs that are held towards people living with HIV/AIDS.
In addition to the Amazing Race treasure hunt Sudiro Husodo, a counselor from Bina Hati, an NGO active in HIV/AIDS awareness programs, gave a presentation on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention and a local band, Kick Larry, belted out several songs to entertain the crowd.

New Year, New Premises

From 2 January 2008 IALF Jakarta will open its new language centre, which is located in Sentra Mulia Building in Jalan Rasuna Said, not far from the previous location. The move has provided the opportunity to update facilities, especially technology for teaching and learning, as well as to change the layout of office space to reflect changes in the organisation over the past few years.
