IALF Jakarta recently completed a six-week, semi-intensive course for mid-career Indonesian diplomats. The course was part of a broader training program organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs (Deplu). As the participants already had advanced level English language proficiency the course focused on particular skills, such as public speaking, negotiating, debating and discussing, in the context of diplomacy and international relations. The participants evaluated the course positively, especially the activities that involved presenting the Indonesian position on a number of topical and potentially controversial issues. The course, taught by Nigel Vickers, included several simulations which provided useful and relevant practice for public relations and dealing with the media. |
The Master Trainers for the English Language Training
for Islamic Schools (ELTIS) activity completed their intensive training
at IALF Bali in December 2007. The 31 participants, selected from Islamic
and state universities and Islamic secondary institutions in East Java,
West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi undertook a training program that
included the In-Service Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT)
from Cambridge ESOL as well as a Training of Trainers component. In addition
to this course they also participated in two-day workshops on Teachers
as Agents of Change, Gender Training, and HIV/AIDS Awareness. |

An important part of the training was a practical teaching component. Participants were required to plan, teach and reflect on a lesson that incorporated communicative and student-centred activities. IALF Teacher Trainers observed the lessons and provided feedback. Four lessons were formally assessed as part of the teaching practice portfolio for the ICELT. |

In 2008 the Master Trainers will be responsible for designing and delivering in-service English language upgrading and teacher training courses for junior secondary teachers in Islamic schools in selected districts in East Java, Lombok and South Sulawesi. As part of this training the Master Trainers will begin identifying potential candidates to become ELTIS District Trainers as part of the ‘cascade’ model of the training design. Master Trainers and District Trainers will aim to train between 750-1,000 English language teachers by the end of 2009. ELTIS is an activity under the Learning Assistance Program for Islamic Schools (LAPIS) supported by the Australian government through AusAID. |
