ICELT Certificate for teachers in Islamic Education

In October 2006, the internationally recognized Cambridge ESOL ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) was awarded to 15 English language teachers from Islamic tertiary colleges across Indonesia. The language teachers followed a 6-month ICELT program at IALF Bali, December 2005 - June 2006, culminating with the visit of a Cambridge ESOL external moderator. IALF Bali is the first institution in Indonesia to be accredited to deliver the ICELT program, which is specially designed for in-service teacher development, assisting teachers to deepen their knowledge and develop their ability to reflect on and improve their teaching.

The ICELT course was sponsored by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) through the Directorate General of Islamic Education, with whom IALF Bali has had a long working relationship. This began in 1991 with pre-departure training for Islamic fellows from the Canadian funded Indonesia-Canada Islamic Higher Education Project. The focus has now shifted to teacher training, to improve the quality of English language teaching and teacher training throughout Islamic tertiary institutions, both state-funded (STAIN, IAIN and UIN) and private, and hence contribute to improving English language teaching in schools.

On the final day of the course, MORA hosted a closing ceremony at the Sahid Hotel, attended by Professor Dr. H Abdurrahman Mas’ud (seen in picture with Mr. Affandi Mochtar, IALF staff, and ICELT participants).

Training in Management of Self-Access Centres

Seven participants from various universities as well as a Bali-based NGO recently completed the first module Overview to Self-Access as part of a new certificate offered at IALF Bali: Certificate in Self Access Centre Design and Management (C-SACDM). The course was taught by ELT specialists Caroline Bentley and Mark Hinde, as well as library and computer specialists Prihatin Safitri and Dwi Kristianto, in order to combine the principles of resource centre management with self-directed language learning. Some of the participants are looking to include language resources for the study of Chinese, French and other languages at their centres.

The C-SACDM is a 150 hour course, divided into a series of six modules: Overview of Self-Access, Introduction to Basic Library Skills, Self-Access Resources, Computer and Technical Skills, Administrative Skills and Self Access Centre Management.

For further information about the C-SACDM please contact Caroline Bentley, IALF Teacher Training Coordinator at cbentley@ialf.edu
