Gender awareness for scholarship students

Students preparing for post-graduate study in Australia under the AusAID-funded scholarship programs attended a guest lecture on gender awareness, given by Nina Shatifan, at IALF Jakarta. Nina presented a session on What Does Gender Have To Do With Me? to the group and challenged them to examine their traditional views on gender and sex. She also discussed with them the importance of gender in development and why it is a crucial factor in social and economic progress.

Other presentations in the Guest Speaker program for the scholarship students this year have included Dr. Purnamawati, Clinical Pediatrician, on Rational Drug Use for Children and Dr. Anne Russon of York University, Toronto, on Recent Research on the Psychology and Behaviour of Orangutans, with reference to her work in Kalimantan.

Visit by Pusat Bahasa to IALF Jakarta

Kity Karenisa and Esra Nelvi Siagian from the National Language Centre of Indonesia – Pusat Bahasa – visited IALF Jakarta recently to discuss resources for the teaching of Indonesian as a foreign language. Kity and Esra met with IALF teachers Asjik Mubanar and Tetty Simanjuntak and were particularly interested in the Album Indonesia CD Rom. This resource, recently revised and updated, is produced by Planet Learning and is an excellent multi-media learning resource at the beginner level. Kity and Esra were also interested to know how the IALF promoted its Indonesian language program to foreigners living in Jakarta and discussed the possibility of creating a database of providers of Indonesian language training to expatriates in Indonesia.

Information about Album Indonesia can be found on www.planetalbums.com It is also available through the IALF.
