Studying Bahasa Indonesia in Bali

Participants from Australia, Canada, France, India, Japan, Poland, The Netherlands and Switzerland, recently completed a two-week intensive course in Indonesian language as part of the Study Bahasa Indonesia in Bali program conducted at IALF Bali.

Participants were placed into four groups as determined by their level of proficiency. Participants were from a range of backgrounds: teachers of Indonesian language, Asian Studies students, an agricultural researcher and specialists working for aid agencies. Most of the participants followed a language only option, but four participants chose to spend some of their time learning about aspects of culture, for example, Balinese dance, batik painting, Indonesian cooking and Balinese painting.

During the course participants went on an excursion to Eastern Bali where they visited a weaving factory, a traditional village, temples, terraced rice fields in Tegallalang and the volcanic lake at Kintamani.

This is the first Study Bahasa Indonesia in Bali program under the direction of Dian Wijayanti, who has succeeded Nyoman Riasa as Manager of Indonesian Language Training at IALF Bali. Dian has taught on these programs many times as well as working in Australian schools as a teaching assistant for Indonesian, under the sponsorship of the New South Wales Department of Education. It was a great experience for her and the teachers to work with such a multinational group and it is hoped that this indicates a growing interest in learning Indonesian from people of many countries.

Training IELTS Examiner Trainers in Australia and the Americas

Vlad Pejovic, Program Manager, IALF Bali was recently appointed by IELTS Australia as Examiner Support Coordinator for the Americas. This will involve him overseeing effective operation of the Professional Support Network for IELTS examiners, and training IELTS Examiner Trainers in the region. He recently conducted his first training session for Examiner Trainers which was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where there were 13 participants from Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica and the US.

Vlad also recently conducted an IELTS examiner training session in Perth, Western Australia. Eleven examiners, mostly working in universities and language schools, participated in the training. There has been a significant increase in IELTS candidate numbers in Australia recently, necessitating the recruitment and training of extra examiners across the country.
