As part of their training under the AusAID-funded Indonesia Australia Specialised Training Project (IASTP) participants studying at IALF Bali recently took part in a series of projects and field trips aimed to provide opportunities for language practice. These activities also facilitated networking amongst each other, as well as with fellow professionals in local government in Bali. The three-month pre-departure program at IALF Bali is in preparation for specialized training to be undertaken in Australia.
The
Health Management group held a poster exhibition, which proved popular with
all students at IALF. Topics included TB, Health Promotion, Hospital Management,
Mortality Rates, and Strategic Planning. The exhibition highlighted the need
for greater health awareness, particularly of the threat of TB, which visitors
to the exhibition were surprised to discover has a higher incidence in Indonesia
than HIV. Quiz questions, specially prepared by the group for visitors, served
to increase audience participation and led to much questioning and discussion
throughout the exhibition.
As a follow-up to the exhibition, IASTP Health Management participants visited
Tabanan
General
Hospital where they were met by hospital director, the late Ketut Sanjana, himself
an alumnus of the IASTP program. The IALF was saddened to hear of Ketut Sanjana’s
recent passing. He had been a key figure in the development of Tabanan General
Hospital in particular and in the development of hospital management in Bali
and Indonesia in general. During the group’s visit to Tabanan Hospital
Pak Sanjana gave an inspirational slide presentation about his own experience
on IASTP, and about the many programs that have helped transform Tabanan Hospital
in recent years. The participants were fortunate to have had the opportunity
to hear about his experience and the accomplishments achieved under his direction.
Pak Sarjana’s contribution to the field of Health Management in Indonesia
will be very much missed.
Around the same time, also in Tabanan, the Bappeda office welcomed the IASTP Economic Planning group, and took them to visit various development sites in the regency. The group were shown initiatives aimed to develop handicrafts, as well as agricultural programs. They drank strawberry juice at a hydroponic strawberry farm in Bedugul in the mountains, and received tips aimed at helping them develop similar projects in their own regencies. The day ended with a tourist stop at Lake Bedugul, and a series of photo opportunities.
The
field excursion activity for the Financial Management group was a trip to Jembrana
in West Bali where they joined groups of civil servants from seven other regencies
in Indonesia who had all come to find out about the progressive programs being
introduced by Jembrana’s regent Gede Winasa.
Following a comprehensive and stimulating presentation by Pak Winasa, members of the group asked questions about the difficulties he has faced in implementing some of the quite drastic changes in management that have made him famous throughout Indonesia. They also had an opportunity to meet and exchange contacts with members of the other groups, and were able to obtain important source material from the Regent's officers that will assist them in carrying out their action plans on their return from Australia. Armed with this material, they prepared presentations about the visit, which they gave to the other IASTP groups at IALF during the following week.
The three groups from Bali and the two who did their pre-departure training
at IALF Jakarta – SME Export Promotion and Legal Drafting - are currently
in Australia where they are participating in specialized training programs.
