Australian Films at IALF Surabaya

In February IALF Surabaya took part in the Mini Australian Film Festival organized by Ikama Surya (Association of Australian Alumni Surabaya). Film screenings were also held at the Language Centre of Institute of Technology Surabaya and Cita Hati High School Surabaya.

The film screenings were open to the public and were free of charge. IALF students were encouraged to attend to familiarize themselves with Australian culture as shown through film. The films screened were Heaven’s Burning, Chopper, The Interview, Lantana, The Bank and Bootmen. Reviews of the movies were made available through the IALF Study Centre, so students could decide which films would appeal to them.

Chopper was the most popular film, although it proved to be too violent for some of the audience. The inaugural film festival was a good initiative to introduce Australian cinema to a new audience. In future it is hoped that the variety of films offered will be greater and that audiences will be able to see Australian culture, lifestyle and landscape through a range of stories on film.

Professional development program for Indonesian teachers

IALF Bali has recently developed a program of one-week courses for in-service professional development of Indonesian English language teachers. There are five courses that lead to the award of a Certificate in Communicative English Language Teaching (CCELT) by the IALF. There is one compulsory unit in principles of English language teaching as well as elective courses including teaching young learners, teaching the core skills, teaching grammar and vocabulary, teaching large and mixed ability classes, using course books effectively and designing and adapting materials. The trainers on the course are expatriate and Indonesian teachers from IALF Bali and IALF Surabaya.

In March this year a group of English teachers from the Harapan school began their second course in this program on the topic of teaching large mixed ability classes. Twelve teachers attended input sessions in the morning and observed IALF teachers in the afternoons. There was also a practical teaching component with written and oral feedback. The participants plan to complete three more courses during this year leading to their being awarded the CCELT.
