School supplies for Aceh

Students line up to receive IALF/KGRE packs
Many schools and school students in Aceh were badly affected by the tsunami. In February, the IALF, in cooperation with Kang Guru Radio English (KGRE), sent 2,000 packs of school supplies to students affected by the tsunami in Lhokseumawe, Aceh. Zainul Abidin Kazhi, an enthusiastic user of Kang Guru services, who lives in Lhokseumawe, assisted the IALF with distribution of the packages. These packages included: two KGRE exercise books, a pen, pencils, a pencil sharpener, coloured pencils, a pencil case, an eraser, a ruler, tippex and the latest Kang Guru Magazine. Pak Zainul spent three days distributing the packages to thirteen schools in the Lhokseumawe area.

The packs were distributed to primary and junior secondary schools in both the state and Islamic school systems. The IALF is very appreciative of the effort made by Pak Zainul in ensuring that the school supplies reached the students who were returning to school after the tragic events of December 2004. Preparing for training in Public Accountability

IALF Jakarta is currently conducting pre-departure training for the Indonesia Australia Specialised Training Project Phase III. There are currently five groups of participants undertaking three months of pre-departure English language training in preparation for their specialised training in Australia. The areas of specialisation are: Gender Mainstreaming and Analysis, Health Services Management,
District and Provincial Financial Planning, Public Accountability and Small and Medium Business Development. There are a total of 100 participants on this program.

The Public Accountability group is being taught by Nigel Vickers and Steve Jacka and consists of twenty participants from various government ministries within the Greater Jakarta area. During the language training program the participants have concentrated on improving their general English language skills as well as learning more specific language skills on the core topic of Public Accountability. A feature of the program has been to use real life scenarios and case studies of the practice of accountability. Each participant is required to give a presentation to the group about their role and responsibilities in public accountability. The participants are due to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Anti-Corruption Commission to learn first hand how these two bodies are improving their accountability to the public.

IASTP III is an Australian government initiative and is managed by Hassall & Associates International.
