Producing Big Books in Bahasa Indonesia – A Bi-lateral Initiative
Marilyn Aldous
Executive Teacher in Coffs Harbour
NSW Dept. of Education and Training, Sydney,
NSW Australia
Abstract
Big Books, used for Whole Language Learning and Shared Reading Experience have been used widely and very successfully in Australian schools since the 1980’s. Big Books written in Languages other than English are highly useful in the acquisition of second language learning, yet there are so few of them.
I wrote my first Big Book in 1994 and my last (of six) in 1999. During that five year period I anticipated that there would be a proliferation of titles written by other language teachers, as the positive feedback from colleagues and booksellers reflected a demand. I believe that even in this Digital Age, the need for a good hardcopy still exists.
It is my intention to 1) demonstrate how Big Book methodology is used to teach language and culture simultaneously, 2) demonstrate their worth in an Integrated Curriculum and their place in the Indonesian National Curriculum, 3) inspire workshop participants to write Big Books for both the Indonesian and Australian markets, 4) provide guidelines for successful writing, and 5) encourage on-line, bi-lateral collaboration to produce resources of the finest quality.
