Aspects of Translation in BIPA

Abstrak

Most of the foreign learners of Indonesian studying the language in Indonesia, particularly Bali, are adults. They have different purposes (utilitarian goals) and want to know how the language is natively used. Learning Indonesian is, in this regards, not seen as learning or knowing the grammatical rules of the language and their applications at the sentence (syntax) level, but how the rules are applied at the text level. This means that learners should be geared towards the domain of textual sentences which will lead them more to the [real] use of the language. It is within this point of view that translation will be considered in the process teaching and learning Indonesian to adults foreign learners. Translation will not be seen as a goal but means or technique of internalising both aspects of grammar and use.

This approach of incorporating translation the BIPA teaching and learning will be much based on Michael Halliday’s theory on text analysis in which aspects of grammar (transitivity) go hand in hand with aspects context of situation (filed, tenor, mode) and context of culture.
