Workshop:
Genre: a Useful Tool for Students Producing
Texts
Helen Pedler
Open Access College, Adelaide, South Australia
Abstract
In Australia the concept of genre has been useful for teachers of English as a second language and other subjects, when teaching students to write particular types of text. Samples and models of various types of text in English are now available, and features of these texts are described in numerous teaching resources.
Definitions of the term "genre" invariably include the idea that it is a product of the culture in which it appears. If this is the case, what are the differences between the same text type in English, and in Indonesian? For example, are the features of a short story or a film review in Indonesian different from those of the same text types in English?
If we ask our students to produce certain
types of texts in Indonesian, they need to know what the structure, tenor,
and linguistic features of those texts are in Indonesian. This workshop
focuses on the features of some text types in Indonesian, and how we can
use our own understanding of this when teaching students to produce texts.
