How to Teach Indonesian Intonation Patterns

Abstract

Most Indonesian instructional courses cover the four main aspects of communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing. However, within the area of speaking, the unique patterns of Indonesian intonation are not covered sufficiently.

Some researchers have analyzed Indonesian intonation patterns in relation to certain sentence types. One researcher has used speech analysis software to plot the intonation patterns of various sentence types (i.e. declarative, interrogative or imperative sentences). However, no researchers have demonstrated how to teach Indonesian intonation patterns to those who are not native speakers of Indonesian.

This paper will demonstrate the use of a new software program called Speech Analyzer (version 1.5) to plot and graph the characteristics of various Indonesian sentence types. This data will be used to analyze and summarize the various patterns of Indonesian intonation.

The new insights on Indonesian intonation patterns based on this research as well as the methods demonstrated for analyzing speech intonation patterns will be helpful to all those involved in the teaching of Indonesian. This presentation will include recorded examples of native speakers, their associated intonation patterns, as well as interlinearlized texts of the intonation patterns.
