Abstract
Immersion language programs and partial Immersion programs are well established around the world in various countries. In 1993 the first Indonesian partial immersion program was established in Queensland. This paper will examine the experiences and outcomes of the program from its inception to the present.
The challenge to establish an Immersion program that would enhance the quality of language outcomes at the same time as content area outcomes is one that strikes a cord for language teachers. The challenge was taken up in 1993 at Park Ridge State High School in Queensland Australia , to establish an Indonesian Immersion Program. Indonesian language was used as the medium of instruction for the content areas of Maths, Science , Social Science and Indonesian language . In this way language was placed in a meaningful context.
The presenter, who set up and managed the
immersion program, will reflect on the learning’s from the program and
discuss any implications for non- immersion teachers of Bahasa Indonesian
in establishing a task based curriculum framework.
