On Friday 4 September IALF Jakarta and IALF Bali hosted closing ceremonies for over 200 scholarship students. These students are heading to Australia to undertake postgraduate study in various Australian universities. The scholarship program – Australian Development Scholarships – is funded by the Australian government through AusAID and is a major component of the Australia Indonesia Partnership.
At IALF Jakarta the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, H. E. Bill Farmer, not only gave the students words of encouragement he also sang a song about it – with lyrics he wrote in both English and Indonesian! The students very much appreciated the support shown by both the Australian government and the Indonesian government. Bapak Suprapto from Sekretariat Negara reminded students of their roles as ‘ambassadors’ for Indonesia when they are in Australia and the importance of their study program to the development of Indonesia.
At IALF Bali the Australian Consul General, Lex Bartlem, represented the Australian Government. Although new to Indonesia, Lex gave part of his speech in Indonesian, and this was very well received by the audience. Students had formed close relationships during the course of study at IALF and this resulted in an emotional parting. A group of students representing all classes sang a farewell song after the presentation of certificates.
IALF Surabaya, in cooperation with Nuffic Neso, recently celebrated Holland month, with activities and events about studying in Holland. Below are some photos of the final night of celebration.

IALF Jakarta recently welcomed a group of 24 English teachers for a morning of professional development activities. The program was organized by the Department of Education (DIKNAS) in Jakarta. The teachers were from towns and cities in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi.
The first session was a presentation by Hywel Coleman on ‘How to Handle Big Classes’. Hywel, from the University of Leeds and currently a consultant to DIKNAS, is a published expert on English language teaching in large classes and was able to provide some useful advice and strategies to the teachers who often have to deal with this issue.
Participants then had a briefing about the resources at the IALF for language teaching and learning. Rina Dewanti, IALF Librarian, explained the range of resources and media used by teachers and students at the IALF.
The final session was led by Kevin Dalton, Program Manager of Kang Guru Indonesia. Kevin explained the resources which are available through KGI for English teachers in Indonesia. These include classroom teaching materials, magazines in English, copies of the Kang Guru radio program and also the opportunity to request a teacher workshop led by a member of the KGI team. KGI, funded by the Australian government through AusAID, is celebrating twenty years of working with Indonesian teachers and learners of English. Please visit www.kangguru.org for more information.

IALF teacher trainer, Josie Gawron, in discussion with CLIL course participants from Diponegoro University Semarang. |
Sixteen lecturers from Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, are currently attending a 5-week teacher training program at IALF Bali. The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) for Higher Education program focuses on preparing the lecturers to deliver lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions in English. The university is committed to a process of continuous improvement and academic excellence and plans to offer a number of teaching programs in English, joining the increasing number of Indonesian universities offering ‘international standard’ courses. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach in which a foreign language (in this case, English) is used as a tool in the learning of a non-language subject in which both language and the subject have a joint role, and claims many advantages as an approach, with a focus on developing confident learners with enhanced academic cognitive and communicative skills. At the end of the course, the lecturers will sit two Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) modules, on Knowledge About Language and on CLIL. The course runs from 21 July – 25 August 2009.
The IALF is looking to work with more Indonesian universities and colleges in training lecturers to conduct lectures effectively in English. For more information on the Cambridge qualification in CLIL, please visit the TKT: CLIL website on the Cambridge ESOL website. |

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) students currently in pre-departure training at IALF Jakarta attended an event at the Australian Embassy as part of NAICOC week. NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee and every year a week is set aside for events focused on indigenous issues. The theme for 2009 was Honouring Our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth.
At the Embassy function students watched a documentary The Apology which outlined the context of the Prime Minister’s Apology in 2008, the events leading up to the day of the apology as well as interviews with those directly affected by past government policies. After the screening Dr Steven Barraclough elaborated on some current indigenous issues and the progress that has been made in addressing gaps between indigenous and non-indigenous sectors of the community. He then conducted a lively question-and-answer session with students on a range of issues relating to race relations in Australia and elsewhere. |
A group of 12 participants recently completed an intensive pre-departure course at IALF Jakarta as part of the Human & Institutional Capacity Development Project. The project is managed by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Tatum Syarifah from IALF Surabaya presenting at the Scholarship Application Support Workshop. |
IALF Surabaya held several Scholarship Application Support workshops earlier this year aimed at familiarizing applicants with the various scholarship opportunities available, as well as assisting them with application procedures. One workshop was held in Malang and two in Surabaya. Around ninety people attended the workshops, mostly lecturers from various institutions, including State University of Malang, Brawijaya University, Airlangga University, College of Economics (STIESIA), University Pondok Darul Ulum, Jombang, and Institute of Technology Surabaya (ITS).
David Spiller, currently working for the University of Adelaide, shared his expertise on how to find out about scholarship opportunities and the components of the application process. He provided some strategies and tips on how to approach the application process. Tatum Syarifah and Philip Rees from IALF Surabaya outlined basic strategies in completing application forms, writing personal statements and interview skills. |
As proof of English language proficiency is often a requirement in the application process, Alex Gough, IELTS Administrator for East Java, explained various aspects of the IELTS test and shared some basic test-taking strategies as well as providing a simulation of the IELTS Listening test.
In addition, this workshop introduced the Scholarship Pathway Program at IALF Surabaya which has been designed to help participants increase their chances of being awarded a scholarship. The Scholarship Pathway Program is a program of intensive English language courses that aim to develop participants’ English language skills to the levels required by scholarship bodies and overseas universities, and includes test preparation as part of the program. The program is used by New Zealand Development Scholarship Awards and ADS as well as by individual participants wishing to fulfil scholarship requirements.
Additional Scholarship Application Support workshops are planned for later this year at IALF to support lecturers and students in their search for educational opportunities overseas.
The Scholarship Pathway Program was officially launched at IALF Surabaya this week as a group of 17 law lecturers from Airlangga University joined a Customised Scholarship Pathway Program to assist them in realising their study plans. Many of the lecturers are applying for scholarships in the Netherlands through the DIKTI scholarship scheme, the Australia Indonesia Grant Program and ADS. The main aims of this 200 hour program are to:
- Upgrade language skills, particularly in the areas of structure and lexis
- Give confidence and fluency in speaking skills
- Develop a greater proficiency in academic writing skills
- Practice and develop effective lecturing skills in English
- Prepare for successful entry into the IELTS test
All participants plan to take an IELTS test in December. English language requirements for postgraduate studies in law are higher than for most other disciplines so the candidates will need to work hard to achieve their goals.
‘The IALF has been running customised and public Intensive English language programs for many years. With the Scholarship Pathway Program we are adding other useful skills and workshops to help strengthen our students’ scholarship applications.’
Alex Gough, Manager, IALF Surabaya

IALF Surabaya and NESO Indonesia worked together to celebrate ‘Holland Week at the IELTS Test Centre’ - a full-week of activities held from 15-19 September 2008. The event aimed to promote education programs in the Netherlands which are conducted in English. The IELTS test is now widely accepted by Dutch institutions and the IALF Surabaya was pleased to promote The Netherlands as a study destination for its students and the public.
Both IALF students and the public were invited to join free Dutch language classes conducted at IALF by the YPKIB (Indonesia Netherlands Education and Cultural Foundation) and a computer workshop led by Anthonius from Ikaned (Netherlands Alumni Association). Presentations on IELTS and the benefits of Study in Holland were also provided.
IALF Surabaya threw itself into a Dutch theme for the week and orange cloth, clogs, tulips and windmills dominated the environment. Photo displays by Indonesian students in Holland, Dutch movies, a book exhibition and free ‘buka puasa’ poffertjes added to the flavour of the event.
On the final day, the IALF’s Smalltalk Café was transformed into a Dutch funfair. Dutch students studying in Surabaya came to model traditional Dutch costumes, one even gave a sitar recital! Visitors enjoyed Dutch snacks and music, and took pictures of themselves wearing Dutch constumes. Keen volunteers from the audience took part in the Poffertjes Eating Competition, Clog Races and the ‘Candid Photo Competition’, adding to the fun atmosphere of the evening. It’s all about fun, friendship and studying in English!

IALF Surabaya now offers a full program of ESP courses in English for Medical Purposes. These courses have been developed in close cooperation with Dr Hafid Bajamal of the Department of Neurosurgery in RSUD Dr Soetomo and are intended particularly to assist those entering specialist medical studies such as PPDS.
Courses are offered at three levels: Pathway Level 1 (Pre-Intermediate), Level 2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Advanced). They aim to assist students with communication skills for day-to-day practice and consultation, academic presentation skills and seminar skills for advanced study. Participating doctors will develop their English language proficiency to enable them to communicate more effectively both during their work and studies and to gain maximum advantage from visiting consultants and specialists.
“We are fortunate that the RSUD Dr Soetomo program encourages us to upgrade our English skills. This will help us in our studies and give us opportunities to attend symposiums oveseas, present at seminars and hopefully write articles for medical journals. Once we start working again as doctors there'll be no more time to take a formal English courses.” says Guido, a doctor currently working at the St Louisa Foundation in Kediri, who joined the first EMP program held earlier this year.

On the 14 December IALF Bali said farewell to the 31 ELTIS (English Language Training for Islamic Schools) Master
Trainers, who have been following a combined Cambridge
ESOL ICELT (In-Service Certificate in English Language
Teaching) and ToT (Training of Trainers) program since
July 2007. The farewell started with a wonderful fish
dinner on Thursday night at Jimbaran beach, with beach
games and entertainment provided by the participants,
tutors and Kang Guru Indonesia. Then on Friday 14
December, the formal closing ceremony was held in the
Seminar Room, with a speech from Mr Geoffrey Crewes,
IALF CEO and presentation of certificates by Ms Josie
Gawron, Teacher Training Coordinator.
The
trainers were recruited by ELTIS from partner institutions
(IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya and IAIN Mataram), from other
tertiary institutions, and also from a number of Madrasah
in East Java and West Nusa Tenggara. During the program
the trainers worked with ELTIS Advisers to produce English
Language Upgrading (ELU) and Communicative English Language
Teacher Training (CELTT) syllabuses and materials, and
are now ready to implement an 18-month teacher training
program for Madrasah Tsanawiyah teachers in the two
target provinces. ELTIS is a LAPIS (Learning Assistance Program for Islamic Schools) consolidation
activity, supported by the Australian government.

On
Sunday 9 December around 200 General
English students and IALF staff got up very, very
early to meet at dawn at Pantai Matahari Terbit in Sanur
for an IALF GE Fun Walk. And walk they did – through
the sawah, down the road, across streams and back along
the beach, looking forward to a breakfast of delicious
sweetcorn. A morning of entertainment followed, provided
by students themselves: at least 6 bands, including Chameleon
and Reload, and 2 singers, while everyone enjoyed lunch
under the trees. It was a great day, a mixture of exercise
and entertainment, and GE students look forward to the
next event in early 2008. I wonder what is in store …?

IALF
Surabaya students organised ‘The Amazing Race’ on World
Aids Day to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. The competition
was held at Tunjungan Plaza, on 1 December 2007 and involved a treasure
hunt with clues and answers related to HIV/AIDS which lead teams
to participating stores.
Stop Discriminating, Start Educating’ was the message of
the competition and IALF students (SP7A) organised the event as
part of a class project hoping it would draw attention and persuade
people to reconsider previously held attitudes towards sufferers
of HIV/AIDS. All participants proudly wore a special edition C-59
HIV/AIDS t-shirt, and a red ribbon – the international symbol
for HIV/AIDS awareness.
‘ Get
ready… set… go! And so the Amazing Race for World AIDS
Day began. For a moment Tunjungan Plaza’s lower ground area
was filled with shrieks, giggles and the sound of fast running footsteps.
Within minutes, blurs of whites were seen on different levels of
the mall, dashing in and out of stores. Our very dedicated photographers
captured their progress, jogging along with the teams, snapping
pictures of perspiring and sometimes, puzzled participants with
a tricky clue in their midst.
Students of SP7A concocted the whole idea of blending social
awareness with a footrace, and it worked. The buzz about the Race
began early on and participants lined up to register, it was free
for IALF students, and Rp. 20.000 for non-IALF participants.
The first team made it back to the finish line 2 hours after
the race began, slowly the rest of the teams trickled in, huffing
and puffing, turned in their pink score cards to the judges, and
collapsed on the floor. ‘Kick Larry’, an indie band,
contributed several songs to entertain them, and Bapak Sudiro Husodo
from Bina Hati explained to them the ABCD of HIV/AIDS prevention.
The winner was SMAN 5 team, an all-girl, non-IALF team, their
prize was Rp.500.000,- worth of Toko Gunung Agung vouchers.’
