IALF Jakarta is the first of the three IALF branches to gain NEAS accreditation. NEAS - National English Language Teaching Accreditation Scheme - is a self-funding, independent and non-profit organisation that works closely with government and the private sector to maintain high levels of quality in the provision of English language training. NEAS is responsible for accrediting English language teaching schools in Australia. IALF Jakarta was the first centre outside Australia to gain accreditation by NEAS International. In addition to the EAP programs provided to donor agencies the IALF Jakarta offers courses for the general public. The most popular of these are IELTS Preparation courses. Students on these courses are preparing for study in countries such as Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany and the US or are planning to migrate to an English speaking country where an IELTS score is part of the application process. Courses are designed to prepare test takers for each component of the IELTS test through intensive practice in the four key skills. There are two schedules:

The IALF in Surabaya provides specialised Pre-departure Academic English Language Training programs for donor agencies and Study Prep, Advanced Skills and Intensive English Programs for the public. All Academic English programs at IALF Surabaya provide students with the necessary skills for international English tests such as IELTS and the new TOEFL iBT. The IALF Surabaya also offers a range of IELTS Preparation courses.
The IALF Surabaya has designed and prepared specialised Academic English programs for groups of students wishing to develop their language skills in preparation for further study overseas. Additional short course options include Cross-cultural Skills, Information Literacy and Computer Skills. Most programs are delivered intensively – at least 4 hours a day and aim to equip students’ with relevant skills to enable them to be successful in their studies whether in Indonesia or overseas. Most students are required to take an IELTS test as part of their application process for admission to overseas institutions, and most specialised Academic English programs at IALF Surabaya include an IELTS Preparation component. Public students wishing to join similar Intensive Academic English programs at IALF Surabaya are recommended to the Intensive English Program (IEP) or the Intensive English Program for Overseas Study (IEPOS).
Study Preparation (Study Prep) is the most popular public program at IALF Surabaya. Study Prep is designed to prepare students for further study in an English language environment, whether at institutions in Indonesia or overseas. This program is taught by native speaker teachers. There are 7 levels in the basic the Study Prep program. Lower levels of the program focus mainly on General English but the emphasis on Academic English increases from level to level. Students wishing to achieve IELTS scores of 5.0 or 5.5 would need only to study to Study Prep 4 or 5. Other demanding higher levels of proficiency for undergarduate and postgraduate programs would expect to achieve IELTS scores of 6.0 or 6.5 upon completion of Study Prep 6 or 7. All students wishing to enrol on a Study Prep course are expected to take a placement test. Students placement testing at Elementary level are recommended to join special General English for Adults courses before embarking upon the Study Prep program.
Our higher-level Advanced Skills programs are designed to build on the thorough knowledge of structures, functions and academic English skills gained through the Study Prep program, and begin to lay the foundations for more advanced academic study, whether in Indonesia or overseas. Academic Writing - aims to develop writing skills to a point where participants are confident in their ability to produce acceptable work within a genuinely academic, university course in English. Critical Thinking Skills - trains participants in the skills needed to assess and evaluate information and opinions and enable them to play a significant and well-balanced role in both written and spoken academic work. Discussion Skills - brings students face-to-face with the language required to play an active and successful part in seminars, tutorials and workshops. Research Skills - introduces students to the basic tools of academic research and offers guidance on planning and designing your own research.
Each level of Study Prep as well as the Advanced Skills courses are 54 hours in duration and completed over 11 weeks. Each lesson is two hours long. Lessons are held twice or three times a week according to the following schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays with alternating Fridays; or
The IALF Surabaya offers a range of Intensive English Programs to the public. These courses are full-time 200-hour courses, comprising 4 hours classroom tuition per day for 11 weeks and provide a cost-effective alternative to intensive English language tuition overseas. Intensive courses are ideally suited to students wishing to develop their language skills quickly – to prepare for further study in an English language environment. The Intensive English Programs are also ideal for students from the outer islands of Indonesia, who do not have access to quality English language tuition but wish to develop their skills intensively in preparation for an IELTS test or to gain insight into western academic culture prior to commencing their studies. for Pre-intermediate level students
IEP is an intensive course with a strong General English focus, designed for learners at high elementary/pre-intermediate level. The course provides an introduction to academic English and is ideally suited to learners wishing to develop their language skills over a short period of time and for those seeking an alternative to more costly intensive English programs overseas. IEPOS is an intensive pre-departure program, specifically designed at 2 levels for students planning to continue their education overseas, using English as the main language. The learning environment and assignments in IEPOS are based on academic standards, so that students will be ready to adapt quickly to their institution abroad. Components of the IEPOS course held in Surabaya include:
The program is divided into two sections: IEPOS 1 and IEPOS 2. Each component is 200 hours and runs over 11 weeks. Classes meet 4 hours a day Monday to Friday from 9:30 – 11:30 and 12:30 to 14:30. Students may take one or both sections of IEPOS depending on the skills required for their study abroad and the IELTS score needed. Students interested in taking IEPOS should sit a special placement test to determine their current level of language proficiency. The IALF offers its public General English for Adults, Study Prep, Regular IELTS Preparation and Advanced Skills courses 4 times yearly. Intensive English Programs include a self-study week in the middle of the program but also start and finish on the same dates.
IALF Surabaya offers a range of public courses to help students prepare for the IELTS test. IELTS Preparation (Regular) (54 hours tuition) runs for 11 weeks. Students practice each module of the IELTS test and develop test-taking strategies. Students will also be able to take full advantage of the resources at the IALF over the 11-week period and assimilate the skills and strategies outside class time. Courses in IELTS Preparation (Regular) share the same dates as the Public Course Schedule. IELTS Preparation (Semi-intensive) (50 hours tuition) runs for 5 weeks. The program is very similar to the IELTS Preparation (Regular) but delivered in a semi-intensive mode – 2 hours a day for 5 weeks. This mode of delivery is suited to students who have limited preparation time or demanding work schedules that involve out of town travel. Courses in IELTS Preparation (Semi-intensive) are offered 8 times a year:
IELTS Orientation (20 hours tuition) aims to introduce students to typical questions in the IELTS test and provides practice in basic test-taking strategies. This program is suitable for students who need to become familiar with the test and its format in order to ensure that their result truly reflects their level of competency. Classes are held every day, Monday – Friday, for two hours. The course runs for two weeks. Please contact IALF Surabaya for course dates. IALF Bali in Denpasar offers a range of Academic English courses to both the public and private sectors. In recent years IALF Bali has run courses for a range of clients that includes AusAID, CIDA and the Asian Development Bank and has prepared Indonesian students for study in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the US. IALF Bali, with over 12 years' experience in the design and delivery of EAP programs for donor-funded scholarship student groups, now offers an intensive EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program for individuals.
